The Leader of the Communist Party of Canada making a stop in St. Catharines...
Miguel Figueroa joined local candidate Sam Hammond in the city Monday.
Figueroa tells CKTB they are seeing a resurgence of interest in their party, especially among young people.
More and more says Figueroa, people are struggling to get by under policies of greed.
Among the highlights of the party's platform, a call for the minimum wage to be set at $15/hr, and the work week cut back to 32-hours.
Figueroa says they are also focussed on job creation, shifting taxes to fat cat corporations and protecting social services.
The Communist party also supports the expansion of democratic rights, cutting military spending and a foreign policy based on peace, cooperation and respect of international law.
Though the party is not under any false illusions, Figueroa says he is optimistic about the upcoming election.
The Communist goal is not to win seats in the House of Commons, but provide an alternative way of thinking to Canadians, on and off the campaign trail.
However, Figueroa makes clear he sees a Conservative majority government as the most wrong-headed and dangerous decision possible.
The party aims to keep the Tories out of the PM's office and elect as many progressive MPs as possible, regardless of party affiliation.
